One of the questions I get asked most often before a shoot is, “What should I wear?”
It’s a great question, and an important one too. The right outfit can make all the difference in how you feel during your session, and in how you connect with your audience through the final images.
Whether you’re planning a headshot session, a personal brand shoot, or a team photography day, what you wear plays a key role in telling your story.
Dress to Reflect Your Brand
The first step is to think about how you want to be perceived. Are you aiming for a polished corporate look, a relaxed creative vibe, or something in between? Your clothes should align with your brand values and the message you want to send.
For example, a solicitor might opt for tailored clothing in neutral tones to convey professionalism and trust, while a wellness coach might choose soft, natural fabrics in calming colours to reflect a more holistic, approachable brand.
Ask yourself:
-
How do I want clients or collaborators to feel when they see my photo?
-
Does this outfit feel like me?
Focus on Grooming
Small details make a big difference in photos. Make sure everyone has had recent haircuts, clean nails, and polished shoes. Subtle grooming choices go a long way in helping you look and feel your best.
Choose Clothing That Fits Well
Fit is everything. Clothes that are too loose or too tight can be distracting or unflattering on camera. Choose pieces that fit you comfortably and allow you to move naturally. When you feel good in your clothes, it shows.
Avoid anything with large logos, busy prints, or overly shiny fabrics, these can draw attention away from your face or distort in certain lighting.
Solid Colours Work Best
Solid colours tend to photograph better than strong patterns. Mid-tones like navy, forest green, rust, soft blues, and earthy neutrals are often flattering across different skin tones and work beautifully on camera. If in doubt, bring a couple of options.
If your brand has a specific colour palette, consider incorporating those tones subtly through your clothing or accessories; this can help with visual consistency across your marketing platforms.
Bring a Backup (or Two)
I always recommend bringing more than one outfit, especially for personal brand shoots. It gives us the flexibility to capture different moods or settings. You might have one look that’s more formal and another that’s relaxed or lifestyle-based. Layers, such as jackets or scarves, are also a great way to add variety without a full change.
Pay Attention to Grooming and Details
Neat grooming makes a difference. Iron your clothes, check for lint or pet hair, and consider a quick mirror check before your session. If you wear makeup, keep it natural and true to your daily look; the aim is to feel like the best version of yourself, not someone completely different.
Most Importantly, Be Comfortable and Be Yourself
Ultimately, the best outfit is the one you feel confident and comfortable in. When you’re at ease, it comes through in your posture, your expression, and your whole presence on camera. That’s what makes a photograph stand out, not just the clothes, but the confidence behind the lens.
